It's a personal journey/experience of the author.    As is said on the inside flap;  "Less memoir that a deep history of people and place ..."

Raising bison is always an "experience"; some survive and some get beaten down.  As with farming, it is oft said that if you want to make a small fortune from the land, start with a big one.  It will dwindle.

Still a good read but a respected author (and bison rancher).
