Clean, and relatively free of clicks and crackle, it seemed a\npretty straightforward task.\u003cp\u003eHowever, I had not counted on two scourges\nof early vinyl - persistent swishing of the vinyl surface, and peak\ndistortion, particularly end-of-side distortion. Correcting or\nalleviating these problems required a huge amount of work - each\nrevolution of the disc produced a slightly different swish which\nrequired individual treatment tailored to its particular\ncharacteristics. At times progress was slow - but I believe the results\nwere more than worthwhile.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDespite its age (and the recording date of\n1951 is partially speculative, based on lengthy research), the sound\nquality has held up remarkably well, helped by the XR remastering, and\nit is truly a joy now to appreciate the delightful subtleties of\nMewton-Wood's exquisite
